Four Wang Painters in Qing Dynasty

2012-01-25 10:53:24

Qing Dynasty is the last dynasty of Chinese feudal society. When you come to study Chinese in China, teachers may tell you that it is an age with great influence to today and also a stage full of complex contradiction. It has gone through a process of exclusion and combination in cultures.

Under this situation, the famous painters Wang Hui, Wang Jian, Wang Shimin and Wang Yuanqi were called the Four Wang Painters in Qing Dynasty because they have the same surname Wang. During the process when you learn Chinese in China, you may be told that all of them were influenced by Dong Qicang in the aspects of painting style and thoughts. Some foreign learners who study Mandarin in China may know that the Four Wang Painters headed by Wang Shimin had deep influence to the painting in the later generations.

Among the Four Wang Painters, Wang YuanYuanqi is the youngest one but has the higest achievement in painting. One thing the foreigners who learn Chinese in China should know is that their landscape paintings were in the mainstream position in Qing Dynasty because their styles obey the conservative notions at that time.
